Forgiveness Is Not Optional
Matthew 18:21–35 · Genesis 50:15–21
From the Trojan War onward, the classical world celebrated a particular vision of strength: defend your honour, avenge the wrong, defeat your enemy. Mercy looked like weakness and forgiveness like foolishness. Into that world comes Jesus Christ with a radically different command: forgive—not seven times, but seventy-seven times. Forgiveness is how Christ breaks the ancient cycle of hatred and revenge and teaches His people to bring the Kingdom of Heaven into a violent world. It is difficult, costly, and often a process, but Christians forgive because we ourselves have first been forgiven an immeasurable debt.
